Aug. 7-9 Quilts on the Tay
An exhibition of traditional and contemporary quilts will be presented by the Lanark County Quilters Guild, in the show of some 200 quilts; a special display of works by twenty-five of Canada’s best-known quilters; a boutique of quilted items; a Merchant’s Mall; on-site sewing machine servicing; demonstrations & mini-workshops; and a Tea room. July 4-12 Tay Canal Week
The 'Tay Canal Week" will be celebrated with a variety of activities, exhibitions, concerts, theatre, and much more, at the Perth Basin, Port Elmsley and Beveridge Locks.
During "Tay Canal Week", there will be music and entertainment every evening at 7:00pm at the Basin (excepting Sunday July 5, at 4:00pm, and Sunday July 12, at 2:00pm). Click here for downloadable list of Canal Week Musical and Other Special Events.

The 12th Annual 'Art on the Lawn Art Show and Sale' takes place at 3054 Rideau Ferry Road, Perth ~ over 30 artists with original works. 10:00am - 5:00pm.. Free admission; five percent of sales go to Great War Memorial Hospital.

At Perth Basin (1:00-2:00pm), a First Nations exhibition of traditional dancers accompanied by Pow Wow drum representing the diverse aboriginal culture of this region.

Doors Open Perth

July 11 Paddling Puppeteer Puppet Show for Children
The Paddling Puppeteers will provide a special event for the children at the Crystal Palace in Perth, to mark the Tay Canal’s 175th, with a variety of colourful puppets and lots of music, presenting an entertaining history of the lakes and rivers of Ontario and a message of conservation. Show starts at 10:30am sharp.
July 10-12 Tug Along
The miniature tugboat 'Tug Along' will be at the Perth Basin dock.
July 4, 5, 10, 11 Yukon Gold
Perth Studio Theatre, in the Tay basin, will present a special production of Robert Service's "Yukon Gold" for the Tay Canal Week; 8:00pm on July 4, 10 and 11th; 2:00pm on July 5th. The Voyageur Canoes will be at the Tay Basin; come and take an exciting tour of the Tay Canal, in these 34' traditional canoes (small fee). Register ahead to ensure a seat (613-264-0094).

July 5 DNE Celebrates the Original Tay Canal
Drummond North Elmsley Township celebrates the original Tay Canal at Port Elmsley, then known as Barbados, with Voyageur canoe tours, Town Crier, historical presentations, visits to original locks, BBQ, wagon rides, music, and more. 11:30am - 3:00pm, Municipal Hall, 310 Port Elmsley Road. July 5 Hike the Tow Path and Visit the Wildlife Reserve Butterfly Garden
An entertaining hike down the historic Tay Canal Tow Path below Perth, cross over the canal by Voyageur canoe, and tour the Butterfly Garden in the Perth Wildlife Reserve; Tours leave the Last Duel Park in Perth at 10 and 11 a.m. and 12 noon. Seating in the Voyageur Canoe is limited to 18 people, so get there early to ensure a seat. For those people who would prefer to see only the Butterfly Garden you can either drive there on your own, or be at Last Duel Park at 10, 11 or 12 noon and the shuttle bus will drive you there. June 28, Paddle the Tay Canal
Come and enjoy a short 10 Km (2 1/2 hour) paddle "Up the magnificent Tay", from Beveridge Locks to the Tay Basin in Perth. Bring a lunch or taste the hospitality of Perth' restaurants. Meet at 9:00am, at Conlon Farm (south west corner of in Perth). "Car Shuttle" will be organised back from the basin to Beveridge - or you can paddle back to Beveridge. Tel. June 20  Kidfish
The 14th Annual 'Kidfish' derby takes place at the Perth Basin. A fun day for ages 2 to 15, to experience the joy of fishing; prizes, trophies, lunch and treats. Registration opens at 8:00am at Perth Legion, 26 Beckwith St. E.; no charge.

May 30 Tay Canal Tow Path Upgrade Day
Volunteers are invited to come and help clear the historic Tay Canal tow path below Perth, under the leadership of the Rideau Trail Association and the Rideau Valley Field Naturalists. Meet at the entrance to the tow path, on Riverside drive, across the River from Last Duel Park. For more

May 23/24  'The Fencibles'
The Canadian Regiment of Fencible Infantry will set up camp at Last Duel Park in Perth, and provide two days of fun and education for all ages, and especially children. The modern day 'Fencibles' is a group of volunteers dedicated to portraying this historic Regiment's activities, equipment and life at the time of the War. The re-enactments will include drills, battles and military skirmishes at Last Duel Park and on the Tay basin. May 23 and 24 begin with a traditional country style breakfast at the Perth Legion, from 7:00 to 11:00am. On May 23, there will be exercises from 9:00am to dusk at Last Duel Park and the basin, and on May 24 from 10:00 at Last Duel Park, followed by dedication ceremony at the Old Burying Grounds at 2:00pm.

May 16 An Invitation to Paddle the Tay
Come and Join Us for a Paddle on an Historic River and help us inaugurate the 175th Anniversary of the Tay Canal, beginning at Perth's Last Duel Park at 10am. Click here for more information
May 16   Official Launch
Official Launch of the Tay Canal 175th Anniversary celebrations and the Opening of the Rideau Canal system for 2009. The launch is centered at the Crystal Palace on the Perth Basin and will include the Farmer's Market, Parks Canada working exhibits, Kettle Boys, canoe/ kayak flotilla, Perth Pipe Band, Voyageur canoes, fiddle music, and much more. Participating in the opening ceremonies will be Mayor John Fenik, MP Scott Reid, MPP Randy Hillier, Reeve Aubrey Churchill, Warden Paul Dulmage, and Rideau Canal Superintendent Gord Giffin. Paddlers are invited to join a canoe/kayak flotilla from Last Duel Park at 10:00am (call 613 264 0094 for information on the flotilla or click here). April 22 Perth Historica Fair
This popular annual fair, held at the Perth Community Centre, celebrates our area's history, in cooperation with the region's schools.  Most appropriately, the theme for the 2009 edition will be the Tay Canal 175th Anniversary.

April 15  History of the Canal
The Perth Historical Society will present an entertaining evening on the history of the Tay Canal, from its early connections with pirates and scandal, its important role on the area's economy, and its present day social and recreational benefits as a little known gem of eastern Ontario.  Perth Museum, 11 Gore St. E., Perth; 7:30-9:00pm ('Tooney' donation).

Jan. 1, 2009 Tay Canal Polar Plunge 2009
On January 1, 2009, the Tay Canal 175th Anniversary celebrations received a first class send-off with a plunge into the Tay Canal by hardy Perthites, beside the Canadian Legion in Perth. The proceeds of this year's plunge will go to the popular archaeology program at Murphys Point Provincial Park, on Big Rideau Lake near Perth. The Tay 175 Anniversary Steering Committee presented a prize to the first plunger and to the plunger with the most pledges. The Steering Committee is pleased to cooperate with the 'Friends of Murphys Point Park' on this event.

Nov. 4, 2008 Watershed Discovery Evening
On November 4, in Perth, the Friends of the Tay Watershed featured the upcoming Tay Canal 175th Anniversary, in their annual 'Watershed Discovery Evening'.

Sept. 27, 2008 Tay Canal Paddle and Cleanup
On September 27, a flotilla of canoes and kayaks carried out an early cleanup of the Tay Canal, in preparation for the upcoming anniversary celebrations in 2009.
