Media Release February 13, 2009
Financial Assistance under the Clean Water Act
The Ministry of Environment (MOE) has asked the Mississippi-Rideau Source Protection Committee to gather local advice on how the Clean Water Act’s financial assistance program should work. Comment Deadline is March 23, 2009
There are two ways you can comment:
· Attend our public meeting on Monday, March 9 at 7pm. Perth Legion (26 Beckwith Street East); or
· Fill out a comment form online at www.mrsourcewater.ca
The Clean Water Act created the Ontario Drinking Water Stewardship Program (ODWSP) to provide financial assistance to people whose properties or activities are affected by the Act.
Since 2007, the program has provided grants for voluntary stewardship projects because it was not known who would be affected by the Act. Starting in late 2009 the program can focus on assisting “affected” people as technical studies will begin to identify what land use activities could pose a significant threat to municipal drinking water sources.
All comments received by March 23 will be forwarded to MOE for their consideration as they draft the 2009-2011 program. MOE will post their draft program on the Environmental Bill of Rights Registry for an additional public comment period this summer.
