TD Foundation Renews Support

for Tay Region Lake Management Program

- $3,500 grant will develop lake status reports

The TD “Friends of the Environment” Foundation have announced their continued support for the Lake Management Planning Program in the Tay region in 2007 with a recent grant of $3,500.  The community-based steering committee for this program advise that the grant will be used to publish a “State of the Lake” report for the Pike Lake Watershed Management Plan and to organize lake planning workshops.

In January 2007, Pike Lake was selected as the second lake to receive focused assistance under the Tay watershed Lake Management Planning Program.  The Pike Lake Property Owners Association, through an appointed steering committee, has already developed a landowner data base and, in 2006, carried out a Lake Values Survey.  The committee is now in the early stages of developing their “State of the Lake” report.  Such reports provide a comprehensive view of the water quality, water levels, and other measurable factors used in assessing lake conditions.  The reports provide an important part of the foundation on which lake management plans are designed.  Information on Pike Lake and its program may be found in the association website at www.pikelake.ca.

A 2006 grant from the TD “Friends of the Environment” Foundation, to the Tay Watershed Lake Management Planning Program, was directed to the printing of a “State of the Lake” report for Otty Lake, which was completed in early 2007.  A draft of this report may be seen at www.rideauvalley.on.ca, under “Protecting our Water”.

Since it commenced in 1990, the TD “Friends of the Environment” Foundation has supported the efforts of Canadians who are dedicated to the well-being of the environment, through community-based initiatives.  Funding for the projects is provided by the TD Foundation, and supplemented by customer contributions at TD Canada Trust branches.

The Lake Management Planning Program for the Tay River watershed region of Eastern Ontario provides assistance to lake groups in the watershed and adjoining areas for researching and documenting their lake conditions and developing lake management plans.  The Program is intended to address the concerns of many lake groups that have recognized that management planning is important to ensure the long-term health of their lakes - but do not have the necessary knowledge for such a technical undertaking.

The Program is managed by a steering committee of six local organizations including The Friends of the Tay Watershed, Otty Lake Association, Rideau Valley Conservation Authority, Tay Valley Township, the Community Stewardship Council of Lanark County, and Mississippi Valley Conservation. .
