Comments on the Mining Act

You have until January 15 to comment on the Ministry of Northern Development and Mine's request for submissions on modernizing Ontario’s Mining Act. 

Please make your support for modernizing Ontario’s Mining Act and for Bedford Mining Alert’s submission known by emailing the Ministry at miningact@ontario.ca or writing to:

It is important that you register your concerns, ideas and suggestions so that they can be considered by the Ministry.

Your comments should describe who you are, where you live and why exploration and mining is not the best use of land in your municipality.  For example, you could say:

"I am a resident of ……….. and have invested tens of thousands of dollars in our community in developing (here you would describe your property. For example, it could be residential, cottage, farm or recreational property). My concerns are ………... My recommendations are ………...

I also support Bedford Mining Alert's recommendations.  In particular, the following:
 -reuniting mining and surface rights in Southeastern Ontario,
 -requiring environmentally sustainable practices and financial bonding to fund remediation at all stages of exploration, development and mining, and
 -delegating land use decisions to local municipalities to enable these municipalities to encourage the type of economic development best suited to their needs."

Remember to send your comments TODAY so they are received by January 15,
2009. Your comments will assist the Ontario Government in making decisions about modernizing the Mining Act.
