RVCA to Provide
Hands-On Aquatic Fun at Upcoming Tay River Watershed Discovery
Day
TAY RIVER WATERSHED, September
12, 2012 — The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) is pleased to
introduce you to some of our lesser-known bug species at the upcoming Watershed
Discovery Day.
Join us on Sunday, September 23 at the
Crystal Palace in Perth to meet local freshwater benthic
invertebrates. Benthic invertebrates are small aquatic animals without backbones
that live on rocks, logs, sediment, debris and aquatic plants during some period
in their life. These animals are an essential part of the stream food chain and
play a large role as biological indicators of river heath. Bugs are extremely
important to both Tay River stream watchers and fly
fishers.
Drop by our display between 1 and 5 p.m. for interactive
introductions to invertebrates straight out of the Tay River. Learn how to identify the different
kinds and what it reveals about local water quality and river health. This booth
will be of “hands on” nature and will be lead by Conservation Authority staff
Adrienne Lewis, RVCA Aquatic Resource Technician and Justin Robert, City Stream
Watch Technician. Additional RVCA program material and displays will also be
available for viewing.
